Start with the exact recipe and its units
Put the tumbler manual and abrasive instructions side by side. Identify the machine type, permitted load, stage, abrasive grade, dose, and water instruction. If the two sources conflict, ask the manufacturer or supplier which complete process applies. Averaging two different instructions does not produce a validated recipe.
Keep tablespoons and teaspoons distinct. A capacity label is also not a measured quantity of dry rock. When instructions say “per pound of rock,” calculate from that material rather than automatically using the number printed on the barrel. Follow powder-handling instructions on the actual product packaging.
A worked example from a supplier
Polly Plastics’ instructions for its grit kits in a three-pound tumbler specify two tablespoons per pound of rock for its coarse stage. Its example uses two pounds of rock and four tablespoons. That is a supplier-specific worked example, not a requirement to put three pounds of dry stones into every three-pound machine.
For that stated dose, the arithmetic is: two pounds of rock multiplied by two tablespoons per pound equals four tablespoons. The barrel fill and total permitted load still need their own checks. Do not use a correct calculation to justify an otherwise overloaded or unsuitable batch.
Re-read the dose when the stage changes
A recipe can change the dose between stages. Polly Plastics lists one tablespoon per pound of rock for its fine and final-polish steps, while RockTumbler.com’s small-rotary instructions use a different fine-grinding dose. This is why a saved “tablespoons per batch” number needs the product and stage attached to it.
Write a separate entry for each step rather than copying the first dose down the page. If media enters the batch, check whether the selected recipe includes its weight. If the wording is unclear, resolve it before calculating. Keep the original instructions with the supply instead of relying on a shorthand label.
Troubleshoot the load before adding extra grit
When progress is disappointing, check the actual recipe, fill, water, rock mixture, and abrasive identity before changing the amount. Record whether the stones moved toward the stage goal and whether the machine operated normally. Extra powder alone does not identify which part of the setup needs attention.
If a supplier recommends an adjustment, save the reason and scope: the exact stone, barrel, stage, and next inspection. That turns an exception into a usable note rather than a new rule for every future batch. Recheck the dose from scratch whenever you change the machine or abrasive.

How much grit goes in a three-pound tumbler?
Use the exact recipe and its weight definition. As one example, Polly Plastics specifies four tablespoons of its coarse grit for two pounds of rock in its three-pound-tumbler instructions. That does not establish a universal amount for every product or stage.
Should I include ceramic media in the calculation?
Only according to the selected recipe. Some instructions count rock plus media; others describe rock weight. Confirm what the supplier intends instead of applying a dose to a different measurement basis.
