Calculate electricity with your own numbers
Energy use in kilowatt-hours equals watts multiplied by operating hours, divided by 1,000. Multiply that result by your electricity rate per kilowatt-hour to estimate the energy charge. Virginia Cooperative Extension explains this same appliance-energy calculation. A suitable energy monitor can provide a measured input; follow its ratings and instructions.
Illustration only: a machine averaging 30 watts for 24 hours a day over 28 days uses 20.16 kWh. At an assumed rate of $0.20 per kWh, the energy charge would be about $4.03. These are chosen calculator inputs, not measured specifications, a current utility rate, or a cost claim for any product. Replace all three inputs with your own.
Separate purchases from consumption
If you buy a container of polish and use only part of it, charging the whole container to a single batch overstates that batch’s consumed supplies. Record the amount purchased and the amount used separately. For consistent comparisons, keep your measurement units the same from batch to batch.
Use a small ledger with these lines: rough allocated to the batch; coarse, medium, and fine abrasive used; polish used; replacement media consumed; electricity; and optional wear allowance. Keep the machine purchase in a separate equipment column unless you deliberately want to spread that cost across expected batches.
Count retries without calling them waste
A repeated shaping stage increases consumable and energy use, but it may be part of the intended finish. Record the reason: more rounding, visible defects, or a process correction. This distinction helps you identify what is avoidable and what reflects your standards.
- Planned extra shaping: include in the project estimate rather than treating the schedule as a failed promise.
- Unexpected repeat: record the observation that prompted it and one variable to investigate.
- Discarded material: record the amount separately so finished-output comparisons remain honest.
- Reusable supplies: charge only the portion consumed or retired, while retaining the cash-purchase record.
Choose a useful output measure
Cost per finished pound can help compare similar batches, but only if you weigh the finished material and define what counts as finished. Cost per gift or display set may be more useful for a casual hobbyist. Do not divide by the starting weight and label the result a cost of finished stones.
Compare batches with similar goals before drawing conclusions about a machine. A batch aimed at highly rounded stones and a batch intended to preserve shape are different projects. Likewise, changing the rough mix and the abrasive process at the same time makes it harder to isolate why costs changed.
Our recommendation is to complete a small number of well-recorded batches before buying larger supply packs or another machine. Your ledger will reveal which items you actually use, whether cleanup or capacity limits you, and whether a bulk purchase would save money without creating an unwanted stockpile.
Separate the starting budget from the cost of a batch
Make two totals. The starting budget includes the machine and missing reusable equipment; the batch budget includes the abrasive, polish, media replacement and electricity you will consume. A kit with a lower checkout price can still require additional supplies before its first complete run.
Use current seller prices for each missing item, then enter the electricity and consumables into the batch-cost calculator. Keep optional display and craft accessories outside the essential starting total. This avoids treating a one-time purchase as a recurring cost.
Questions at the workbench
Does a rock tumbler use a lot of electricity?
Calculate it from the exact machine’s measured or documented watts, actual running hours, and your utility rate. There is no single accurate monthly cost for all models and households.
Should I include the tumbler purchase in batch cost?
Keep it separate for a basic consumables comparison. If you want a full ownership estimate, show the machine cost and the number of batches over which you choose to spread it.
Why was my second batch more expensive?
Check stage repeats, rough allocation, actual operating hours, and whether you counted an entire supply purchase instead of just the amount consumed. Change one comparison variable at a time.
