Identify what you are trying to reuse
Polly Plastics’ FAQ explicitly tells customers not to reuse its grit while distinguishing reusable filler material. Its ceramic cylinders can be cleaned for later stages; its plastic pellets should remain assigned to the stage in which they were used. This distinction resolves much of the confusion in advice that uses the word media for several different supplies.
Separate the powder, the filler, and the rocks in your supply record. “Reusable” printed on a ceramic-media listing does not describe the life of the grinding powder beside it. When advice is unclear, ask which material is being recovered and which step it is intended to enter next.
A bucket of slurry is not a bag of graded grit
A tumbling batch produces a mixture of abrasive and material removed from the stones. RockTumbler.com describes that mixture as spent grit and tiny rock particles. Recovering sediment from it does not establish the sediment’s particle-size distribution, cleanliness, or remaining cutting behavior.
That is the practical uncertainty behind our fresh-grit recommendation. It is not a claim that no particle can ever cut again. It means the recovered mixture is not documented as the same supply you measured at the start. Do not move that uncertainty into a finishing batch where you are trying to control the abrasive.
Keep experimental reuse separate from a baseline recipe
If an experienced operator chooses to investigate recovery, the experiment should stay clearly labeled and separate from a supplier-supported process. Preserve the original stage, material identity, and what was actually done. Do not describe an unmeasured recovery as a replacement for a known medium or fine grade.
For a first or important batch, there is little value in adding another variable when a predictable recipe is available. Build a successful baseline first. If you later compare methods, use the comparison to ask a defined question rather than assuming a darker or gritty-looking sediment still meets the original specification.
Compare the whole cost, not only the recovered powder
Write down the cost of the fresh charge for the stage you would otherwise run. Compare that with any added cleaning time, additional machine time, and risk of needing to repeat preparation. Use your own receipts and operating figures; there is no universal saving percentage for recovered grit.
The easier reuse opportunity is usually the material explicitly sold for repeated use. Clean, inspect, and label the appropriate filler, while keeping finishing supplies protected from contamination. Collect discarded slurry away from household plumbing and follow local disposal requirements. Reuse and responsible collection are separate decisions.

Can used coarse grit become my next fine grit?
Do not assume that. A recovered mixture is not verified as a particular finer grade and may contain rock debris or larger particles. Follow the specified abrasive sequence and clean between stages.
Can ceramic pellets be reused if grit cannot?
Yes, suitable ceramic media has its own reuse instructions. Clean it thoroughly and confirm it is prepared for the intended stage. Plastic pellets require separate stage-specific handling because retained abrasive can carry over.
